Frenchie begins to question his identity and role in the world after he's unable to save RiRi and shoots Travis for betraying them and causing the death of RiRi. Frenchie matures and becomes a leader through the novel. Frenchie ultimately learns to take pride in his identity as a young Indigenous man and in his family, and eventually comes to terms with his failings.
