whydo you think in the movie the director skiped murder and rape scene?

I think this novel has a large young adult following. Showing this scene would have driven the category up from PG into the restricted territory. It might have also upset the demographic they were trying to attract. I think the director felt it was enough that the rape and murder is implied without having to show it.
