The black box represents tradition, and the lengthy description allows the reader to visualize the fact that the village adheres to this tradition regardless of whether or not people realize why the tradition originated in the first place. The black box could actually be seen to represent many of the traditions, celebrations, and other things that we ourselves carry on with even today...... things we celebrate, just to have a celebration.
