● Delacroix: Jesus' sacrifice for us on the cross.

● Graves: People die and are buried in graves.

● Summers: Setting...... the season in which the lottery takes place.

● Bentham: British philosopher who advocated for separation of church and state, as well as, freedom of expression.

● Hutchinson: Allusion to Anne Hutchinson, who was exiled from her Puritan community for challenging Puritan male-authority.

● Warner: A word that means "caution".

● Martin: Originated with the Roman god Mars, "the protective godhead of the Latins"; the Roman god of war.
