The Lottery

This story was published in 1948, just after World War II. What other cultural or historical events, attitudes, institutions, or rituals might Jackson be satirizing in this story?

In the year, 1948, most of the world, including the United States, was struggling to digest the scope of WWII's violence. The war, the genocide, the use of atomic bombs...... all of which were responsible for the horrifying number of deaths wrought by the war were too enormous to comprend. Jackson used these events to illustrate the acceptance of violence at all levels.
