I think this reveals the morbid trait of humans wanting to watch and inflict suffering especially when forced by conformity. People accept all kinds of ideas in the name of conformity. Stories like "The Lottery" show the more subtle dangers of communities, particularly those that are close-knit and susceptible to gossip.
