5.a) What is the first point in the story at which you sense something is not quite right? What specifically generates that feeling?

The lottery itself sounds like a maundane thing that must get done so that "the villagers to get home for noon dinner." This sounded off to me. Generally a lottery is not an ordinary event which people endure and shuffle home afterwards.
