In the novel, The Kite Runner, we learn that King Zahir Shah was deposed in 1973. We also learn that Soviet forces took over the country in 1979, the time in the novel that Amir and his father leave the country. When the Soviets left Afghanistan.... there was a lot of infighting between rebel factions.
