why have baba, ali and rahim khan lied to hassan and amir all these years? is this consistent with their personalities? what makes this lie so important?

I believe you're referring to the facts surrounding Hassan's parentage? Everyone kept the fact that Hassan was Baba's son a secret in order to preserve his honor. Sanaubar (Hassan's mother) was a Hazara, a relationship between Baba and a Hazara woman would have been unthinkable..... shameful. Thus, Baba kept Hassan close but never claimed his as a son.
