Amir responds with honesty. This is significant because he tells the truth about his father, Hassan, and leaves no mistake that he will be caring for his nephew. It is significant because Amir has finally accepted it.

"It's all right." I turned to the general. "You see, General Sahib, my father slept with his servant's wife. She bore him a son named Hassan. The boy sleeping on the couch is Hassan's son. He is my nephew. That's what you tell people when they ask."
