What is ironic about Algernon's statement, "I hate people who are not serious about meals it is so shallow of them"?

I suppose he is being shallow about judging people who do not take meals as seriously as he does.

This is a comedic statement because throughout the play, Algernon is shown to be shallow, which represents the entire upper class being shallow in Victorian society. This quote shows the hypocrisy of the upper class, being blind to their own shallowness.
