Hi. I have a few questions about the Hunger Games series. I'll post them one at a time. Here's the first question:
The novel incorporates elements of survival, competition and violence. How does Collins portray these aspects of the Hunger Games, and how do they compare to the portrayal in the Hunger Games series?
I think all three of these elements (survival, competition, and violence ) are within the dystopian framework of spectacle. President Snow and the elites have made these into spectacle for entertainment. The concept of "spectacle" is that the ruling class keeps its transgressions hidden by distracting the population through entertainments. In contemporary society, the argument would be that our surplus of vacuous television promotes a consumer culture that keeps the lower classes from identifying how terribly they are oppressed. There are certainly elements of all three that you mentioned but they are exploited fand manipulated for the consumption for the upper class.
