How does Katniss's ethics negatively affect her before the hunger games?

Katniss refuses to kill certain people like Peeta and Rue. This makes her more vulnerable than if she was just looking after herself. While this trait may make her more vulnerable, it is also what makes her so special. She fights for people she loves which makes her a fierce competitor.
