Why does Maddie feel uncomfortable when Peggy teases Wanda ?

Maddie is uncomfortable because she takes the time to think about Peggy's circumstances. They all know that Peggy is motherless, but they don't stop to think what that means..... thinking about it makes Maddie uncomfortable. Peggy has no one to mend, wash, or iron her clothing, and she only has one dress..... things were hard enough for her without the teasing.
