Why did Dr. Watson and Sir Henry hear footsteps in the passage? (chapter 7-9)

Barrymore walked through the corridor and crouched at the window...... he was looking for something on the moors. At this point, Watson isn't sure what the man is doing or what, if anything, he's looking for.
