How dose Bilbos intelligence get him into Lonely Mountain?

How dose the author give the answer to this puzzle before the characters have figured it out? Why dose he do this?

When Bilbo hears a thrush near the door, he remembers Elrond's story, and the way in which the key is supposed to be revealed on Durrin's Day. Thus, Bilbo and the dwarves settle down and await the setting sun.
