Tolkein's "Hobbits" were an imaginary race, similar to humans. They were diminutive in size and had large, hairy feet. "Hobbit" means "hole-dweller, an apt description of those who carved their homes out of the hillsides. Happy-go-lucky, the Hobbits were known to be shy of humans. They enjoyed farming, partying, drinking, and socializing.
