Why did Nick only want to stay at the West Egg for a short amount of time?

In the conclusion, we have an explanation for why Nick leaves West Egg.... New York and goes home to the midwest. I do not find evidence of Nick only panning on staying in the West Egg foe a short period of time. In the first chapter, Nick says that he believed his move would be permanent.
