Meyer has made most of his money through his participation in organized crime. He has helped Gatsby make money through selling and distributing illegal liquor; the fact that he and Gatsby are still friends hints that perhaps Gatsby is still making money illegally.

Gatsby describes Wolfsheim as an infamous gambler, and the man who fixed the 1919 World Series.

“Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he’s a gambler.” Gatsby hesitated, then added coolly: “He’s the man who fixed the World’s Series back in 1919.”
