In Chapter 5, what does Nick mean when he says, "However, as calmness wasn't an end in itself, I made an excuse at the first possible moment..."?

Nick means that even while acting with all calm and decorum, he didn't want to be a part of Daisy and Gatsby's reunion. He was uncomfotable and quickly excused himself from their meeting.
