Gatsby is selfish because the only thing he is able to see is what he wants. He has tunnel vision, and at the end of the tunnel stands Daisy..... alone and his. The fact that she's married is something that can easily be solved, and her daughter only once seen becomes any kind of reality. Gatsby doesn't think outside the box and see what might happen, but rather only sees what he believes will happen. This is evident throughout the book.
