Tom is without doubt a very racist man. He sees himsefl as superior to others because of his Nordic roots. He compares "old money" marrying "new money," with the intermarrige between blacks and whites. He also complains of the "self-control" exhibited by other races and says they sneer "at family life and family institutions."
