Closely examine the paragraph that begins with "He did extraordinarily well in the war" down to "The letter reached Gatsby while he was still…" What new truths do we learn about Gatsby regarding the war?

We don't actually know if Gatsby actually fought in the war or what capacity he was involved in it. Much of Gatsby's past and persona remains an enigma to the reader. Gatsby is certainly not all that he portrays himself to be.
