Nick has always been impressed by Gatsby's confidence yet, as he examines Gatsby further, he big gins to see this confidence as superficial. There are cracks and beneath them, Gatsby is vulnerable and alone. Gatsby throws these parties but remains on the outside looking in.

Firstly, Gatsby acts confidant, almost arrogant, but he isn't at all that way. Second, he throws parties he doesn't enjoy and wears expensive clothing he doesn't really care for.
