References to Rex's alcoholism are most prevalent in Part III of the novel. In this section we learn how Rex dramk away the family's money and disappeared for days, leaving his family to fend for themselves. His inability to work, in addition to his use of funds that should have been feeding his family, both contribute to the family's problems.
