In giving Jonas memories, the Giver often gives Jonas a glimpse of the intangible.... things he thinks he understands but doesn't know why. When the Giver gives Jonas the memory of Christmas, Jonas immediately comments on the family gathered together, particularly the grandparents, but most of all the emotion of love. Another aspect Jonas finds in the same scene is the fire he sees burning in the hearth..... the candle..... the feeling of warmth that embraces the scene, a feeling he finds intangible because he's always been taught to associate fire with danger.

He was in a room filled with people, and it was warm, with firelight glowing on a hearth. He could see through a window that outside it was night, and snowing. There were colored lights: red and green and yellow, twinkling from a tree which was, oddly, inside the room.

He could feel that there was risk involved, though he wasn't sure how. "Well," he said finally, grasping for an explanation, "they had fire right there in that room. There was a fire burning in the fireplace. And there were candles on a table. I can certainly see why those things were outlawed.
