The Giver

THE GIVER

What was unique about the way children and infants were cared for in the community? What would you say or conclude about a community that would call a child by a number instead of a name for its first year of life?

Each newchild is immediately taken away from its Birthmother and is cared for by Nurturers in the Nurturing Center until they are matched with an adopted family. Birthmothers become laborers at the end of their three years of birthing. Children are given a number because they are not considered "people" until they are deemed "normal" by the Elders.
