What does Gitl justify herself when Hannah is upset to hear Gitl joking about death?

Gitl is trying to calm people down and put things in the open. Hannah cries out for Gitl, who comforts her and tells Hannah to promise her she will not cry in front of the Nazis. Hannah promises she never will.
