During Tom's wife's initial encounter with the devil, the black man refused to come to terms and said he required an offering. When she returned to meet him, she carried all of the couple's valuable in her apron.

Tom now grew uneasy for her safety, especially as he found she had carried off in her apron the silver tea-pot and spoons, and every portable article of value.
