Olenka is a flat character ( static) throughout the story her nature somewhat seems familiar that is being gentle, compassionate , insecure and lacking wholeness of oneself without a man in her life she is unable to formulate any opinion of her own . this is noticeable when she first marries kulkin a theatre artist she tends to agree with everything that he says . similarly when she marries pustovalov yet again she becomes dependent on her second husband unfortunetly when he dies olenka begins an affair with Smirnin an army veterinary surgeon who is seperated from his wife finally Smirnin is transferred elsewhere .Olenka is left alone with nothing to talk about and her lack of independence is revealed and she appears to be a rather paralysed person with little emotional or mental development due to her dependency on others many years later olenka yet again becomes attached to the young boy of smirnin and finally she has someone to talk about showcasing that olenka will always remain a women with no self identity and who is merely a mirror who imitates the life of others.
