Why did Miller include the note on historical accuracy?

There is a note on the historical accuracy of this book. Why is it there?

Miller is not a historian, but he did provide the background and historical context necessary for the reader to understand his characters. The factual information available about his characters is limited.... thus, he took creative license. The Crucible is an example of historical fiction.
