What does Hale do that makes him seem heroic but is really wrong?

Hale encourages certain member of the community who've been accused to confess to crimes they have not commited. He sees this as heroic because the accused will not be executed if they confess.... Proctor refuses to sign his name to a lie, thus, refusing to tarmish his name in order to save his life.
