Villefort works tirelessly at Calvacanti's case to keep his mind occupied. Villefort's efforts at preparing Calvacanti's case will of course be in vain. He will be ruined at this trial. It is ironic that Villefort, himself guilty of the attempted murder of his newborn baby, insists that his wife commit suicide for the murder of Valentine. She is merely a reflection of his own disrespect for life.
