As the title and one of the settings of the novel, Monte Cristo is a real place, and its name means the Mountain of Christ. This specific choice is significant because it supports some of the main themes of the novel, namely, the themes of resurrection, redemption, and salvation.

Another justification for the title would be that of status. Edmond's ability to take on a new name and title illustrates the ease with which some moved between the classes and took on new identities.
