what was ironic about Tateh's worrying about "black folks. . . stealing from him"?
Tateh was Jewish and didn't like black people.

That owned a grocery store in Suffolk. His customers were mostly black and he despised them. He also cheated them on a regular bases which is why his statement is ironic.
