Why does Max feel mortified about sleeping in Liesel's room? What does he promise Hans and rosa?

I think Max was mortified about the inappropriateness of a grown man sleeping in a girl's room. It was also dangerous for Max to be seen in the house. Max promises Hans and Rosa that he will remain in the basement and not make a sound.
