There is an abundance of "book burning" in the novel; only Mein Kampf, Hitler's own book is safe from destruction. Max's gift of his own copy of Mein Kampf is a gift to Liesel. He paints over the pages of Hitler's book and wirtes stories for Liesel on top of them. The book symbolizes the power of words, and the power of friendship; Max's words of love and friendship, have in essence, overpowered Hitler's own words of hatred.
