What do you think is the relationship between Max and Hans Hubermann?

Max seems like an extension of his father to Hans. He exists, like the accordion, a reminder of a kind man who once gave his life for Hans. Hans puts his life at risk for Max. THere is also a fight in Max that Hans respects, almost envies. Max will do anything for Hans and often feels ashamed for staying in his basement and putting his whole family at risk.
