Hans dislikes the Nazi Party and their Nazis actions. He feels for his friends, who are made targets by Nazis, and he often puts himself in danger to protect them. Two examples of this would be Hans' painting over the slurs on Jewish businesses and taking Max into his home.

Hans Jr. is a staunch member of the Party. He was indoctrinated by Nazi propaganda since he was a youth, and he is ashamed of his father's kindness towards the Jews. Hans Jr. pushes his father to become a member of the Party, and Hans does apply to appease him. He views his father as a coward, and he refuses to return home because of his anger over what he perceives to be his father's failures.
