How does the author create suspense a the start of the chapter

Tom and Huck play a prank on Jim.

Jim hears them moving around outside and goes out to see what's making noise. It's very dark, and Jim is a very big man.......... and they end up standing on either side of him when he comes out to look. Suspense is created in the boys' feeling that they'll be found out.
