How does he author create suspense at the start of the chapter?

Jim hears the boys moving around outside and goes out to see what's making noise. It's very dark, and Jim is a very big man.......... and they end up standing on either side of him when he comes out to look. Suspense is created in the boys' feeling that they'll be found out.
