Why does Joey say he tried to take Mike's shoes off when he died?

After Erik and Arthur make fun of Joey's shoes, Joey breaks down. He says that he took Mike's shoes off, after he was hit by the lightning, because that had always made him feel better. Joey just wanted his brother to feel better.
