How does the author depict Paul's mother in the beginning if the story?

Mrs. Fisher is all about looks and appearances. She would rather look like she has a happy well-adjusted family rather than actually have one. She seems oblivious to Paul's emotional needs as well as the fact that her other son, Erik, is a sociopath. She enables Erik's scary behavior and lets Paul fend for himself in some very cruel, mostly middle-school, environments
