Did Robert Smith ultimately commit suicide?

Robert Smith attempted to fly off the roof of the Mercy Hospital. He was trying to escape, and he jumped to his own death. From the text, we can infer that his act was one of suicide.... believing the silk wings would allow him to fly was an act of desperation.
