Queenie married Bernard after her aunt had a stroke and died. If this hadn't happened, she likely wouldn't have married him.... she'd been putting his proposal off. After her aunt's death, however, Queenie's mother out for the idea of her retuning home to live with her family. Queenie's response....
'No,' I told her. I've some good news for you. I'm getting married. Mother, to Bernard Bligh.' pg. 258
Queenie had no intention of going back home.
