Siddhartha and Govinda epitomize the theme of "friends as opposites." They begin their journey together, and they later part to concentrate of their own desires. Siddhartha wants knowledge, he wants to study and learn. Govinda wants the same thing, but he turns away fro study and doctrine...... he wants to acquire his knowledge through personal experience and life choices. Later, the two come back together, but all in all, their friendship is one of two very different people who complement one another.
