She did not want to acknowledge his death; the community finally had to intervene and take his body away for burial. Ultimately she became more and more reclusive and had little contact with anyone else in the community.

After her father's death, Miss. Emily behaves very strangely. First, she refuses to admit that he has passed away. Secondly, she had to come under threat of the law before allowing his burial. This initial reaction was, however, short-lived. She began running around with a man named Homer, something the townspeople deemed inappropriate because there didn't seem to be any intention of marriage. Later, Homer disappeared, as did Miss. Emily for around six months (she wouldn'r come out of her house).
