The narrator's dilemma was whether or not he should shoot the elephant. The elephant, which had recently been ravaging the bazaar and had killed a man in its rampage was now calm. Thus, Orwell, was torn between shooting the animal who was deemed dangerous or not..... because it was valuable. As a police officer, and a European police officer at that, Orwell, like the others in his profession was despised by the natives. Not shooting the elephant would make him appear to be weak...... killing the elephant, was something he believed to be unnecessary. Thus, he was torn between the two choices.
