"Asides", which Goldsmith uses throughout the play are theatrical devices common in the theatrical productions of this period. Goldsmith uses this technique, which refers to a line of dialogue that a character speaks directly to the audience, to reveal that characters thoughts. Thus, the audience is made privy to certain facts that the characters know nothing about. It is effective.
