Shamela as a title is significant because this is a satire. Shamela, in contrast to the novel, Pamela, comes to mean shame or sham.... hypocrisy, false piety. Rather than the pure, innocent, and chaste heroine of Richardson's, Pamela, Fielding has created Pamela's polar opposite..... the woman, who seduces the man.
